Maison Mihara Yasuhiro SS25: “Persona Part Five” – The Art of Identity Unraveled

Maison Mihara Yasuhiro’s Spring/Summer 2025 collection, unveiled at Paris Fashion Week, dives deep into the concept of persona and the evolving nature of identity in today’s world. Inspired by the designer’s reflections on childhood and the emergence of personality-including that of his own infant child-this season’s theme is rooted in both nostalgia and the search for authenticity.

Superficiality and the Modern Mask

In a time when surface-level interactions dominate and the lines between public and private selves blur, Mihara Yasuhiro uses fashion to question what it truly means to have a personality. The collection’s standout pieces-MA-1 bombers and denim jackets constructed entirely of front panels-symbolize the superficial facades people present to the world, intentionally omitting the “back” to highlight the lack of depth in modern expressions.

Shirts and blousons that look identical from both sides further play with the breakdown of traditional notions of identity, suggesting that the distinction between what’s shown and what’s hidden is fading away. Transfer prints, created in collaboration with TALKING ABOUT THE ABSTRUCTION (TATA), evoke the image of masks stuck to bare faces, underscoring the paradox of superficiality and hidden depth.

Childlike Playfulness Meets Avant-Garde Design

Mihara’s playful spirit shines through in accessories and details: star and heart stickers on sweatpants, dinosaur-shaped bags, teddy bear motifs, and sandals with rubber duck heels. These whimsical touches recall the uninhibited creativity of childhood, infusing the collection with both vulnerability and fun. The new “SCOTT” and “LARRY” sneakers, featuring distorted, melted soles, stand out as bold reinterpretations of classic footwear, embodying the brand’s avant-garde approach.

A Show Full of Surprise

The runway presentation itself broke conventions, with staged karaoke performances and confetti showers transforming the venue into a scene of pure joy. Yet, between the moments of celebration, foreboding music reminded guests of the collection’s deeper, more introspective themes-a reflection of the instability and complexity of the human condition.
